The most direct way to learn Buddhism is to read and directly live the Pali sutras, some of the oldest records we have of the Buddha's teachings. Knowing some Pali helps to have such firsthand wisdom. This popular and effective course (the first of its kind here) is based on "situational" Pali, that is, Pali as used (contextually) in the early teachings themselves. We will learn Pali the way we learn English in our schools today: less grammar, more usage. Topics covered include:

  • The basic structure of the Pali language. [Optional Introductory Class only]*
  • Pali vocabulary and usage.
  • Basic knowledge of important Pali sentences, terms, phrases.
  • Locating suttas in the Pali Canon.
  • Sutta reading and reflection.
  • The Buddha's teaching as living experience.

*THE INTRODUCTORY CLASS will cover the following:
  • The Pali alphabet & sounds
  • The Pali dictionary alphabetical order
  • The Pali Canon: structure & conventions
  • Pali dictionaries and tools
  • Pali & IT (Pali fonts, etc.)
