Pali For Beginners
A basic course based on the Suttas

Pali means "text" or "canon", and is the name given to the earliest complete records of the Buddha's Teachings and to its language that has preserved it for some 2500 years. Learning Pali helps us have direct access to the Buddha's Teachings for a better understanding of them and for our spiritual practice and happiness. The Pali language is much simpler than Sanskrit.

Date: Every Wednesday starting on 7 April 2004 (10 sessions)
Time: 7 p.m. - 9 p.m.
Fees: S$150.00 (Limited to 30 students, first come first served)

Course Contents:
  • The basic structure of the Pali language: alphabet & sounds.
  • Pali vocabulary and usage.
  • Basic knowledge of importance Pali sentences, terms, phrases.
  • The Pali Canon: structure & conventions: locating suttas in the Pali Canon.
  • Suttas reading and reflection.
  • The Buddha's teaching as living experience.
  • Tools for learning Pali on your own: dictionaries, Pali for beginners' books.
  • Pali & IT (Pali fonts, etc.)

    Course Instructor:

    Piya Tan is a full-time lecturer and researcher in early Buddhism, and has conducted numerous courses and retreats since 1980s. In 1992, he was a Visiting Scholar (Buddhsit Studies) at the University of California at Berkeley, USA. He has also spent many years as a monk before settling down with a family.

    Who should attend this course?

    Anyone interesting in learning or teaching Buddhism. This course is made simple for ease of learning Pali for reading of Buddhist Scriptures.
