PROVISIONAL SYLLABUS 2002

Every Saturday, 3.00-5.00 p.m.
These suttas will be translated and paraphrased with amplifications and notes by Piya Tan specially prepared for the weekly course. Provisional syllabus:
1. Samaññaphala Sutta (D 2) [New translation. Completed study]
--The Buddha heals the mind of a parricide king. This sutra is a classic summary of the Buddha's teachings.
2. Apannaka Sutta (M 60) [New translation]
--Why doing good is better than doing evil. The prototype of Pascal's Wager.
3. Bálapandita Sutta (M 129) [New translation]
--On the foolish and the wise: a brief survey of states of birth. Connected sutta: Deva,dèta Sutta (M 130).
4. Veludvareyya Sutta (S 5.7)
--To the people of Bamboo Gate. On the 5 Precepts.
5. Dhamma,cakka-p,pavattana Sutta (S 56.11) [New translation]
--The 4 Noble Truth in perspective.
6. Adittapariyaya Sutta (S 35.28)
--The Fire Discourse. The nature of desire.
7. Anatta,lakkhaöa Sutta (S 22.59)
--Doctrine of non-self.
8. Cúlamálunkya,putta Sutta (M 63)
--What religion should really be about.
9. Tevijja Sutta (D 13)
--The Threefold Knowledge. How to find God. Paraphrased.
10. Vitakkasanthána Sutta (M 20)
--How to remove distracting thoughts.
11. Ánápánasati Sutta (M 118)
--On the mindfulness of the breath.
12. Satipatthána Sutta (M 10)
--On the stations of mindfulness: The body; sensations; the mind & mind-objects.
